Clinical studies of semaglutide generally measure glycated hemoglobin, fasting plasma glucose, body weight, and composite cardiovascular endpoints. The SUSTAIN program enrolled adults with type 2 diabetes, while the STEP program focused on obesity without diabetes. Administration follows a stepwise escalation schedule designed to limit gastrointestinal effects during the first weeks. Reported outcomes include mean percentage weight change, the proportion of participants reaching defined weight-loss thresholds, and rates of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Long-term data on durability after treatment stops are still limited and remain a topic of ongoing research.
Semaglutide is a synthetic peptide analog of human glucagon-like peptide-1, developed by Novo Nordisk and first approved in 2017 for type 2 diabetes. It belongs to the incretin mimetic class, a group of agents that reproduce the glucose-dependent actions of endogenous GLP-1. The molecule was engineered to resist degradation by dipeptidyl peptidase-4 and to bind serum albumin, extending its half-life from minutes to roughly one week. Approval for chronic weight management followed in 2021, based on large cardiovascular and obesity outcome trials.
GLP-1 receptors are expressed on pancreatic beta cells, in the gut, and in several brain regions. Receptor activation raises cyclic AMP, enhances glucose-dependent insulin secretion, and suppresses glucagon release when blood glucose is high. Effects on gastric emptying and on hypothalamic appetite circuits reduce energy intake. Because insulin release remains glucose-dependent, the risk of hypoglycemia is low when the drug is used alone. The precise contribution of each pathway to body weight change in humans remains an area of active investigation.
Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography is the standard method for purity assessment, separating the peptide from truncated or oxidized variants. Mass spectrometry confirms molecular mass and detects modifications, while ultraviolet absorbance near 280 nanometers supports concentration measurement through tryptophan and tyrosine residues. Circular dichroism can indicate secondary structure, though the peptide is largely helical in solution, and ion-exchange chromatography resolves charge variants. Purity values above 95 percent are typical for research-grade material. Stability studies track degradation over time under defined conditions.
Lyophilized semaglutide is typically stored at temperatures between minus 20 and minus 80 degrees Celsius for long-term preservation. Short-term storage at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius is common for working aliquots. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles can degrade the peptide and are usually avoided. The molecule is hygroscopic in its solid form, so containers should remain sealed with desiccant. Solutions are less stable than powders and are generally prepared fresh. Light exposure is limited because aromatic residues can undergo photo-oxidation.
Native GLP-1 is degraded rapidly by dipeptidyl peptidase-4. Semaglutide resists this cleavage because alanine at position 8 is replaced by alpha-aminoisobutyric acid. A second substitution at position 34 introduces arginine, which further stabilizes the peptide. The most distinctive modification is a spacer and C18 fatty diacid attached at lysine 26, enabling strong albumin affinity. These three changes together produce a half-life measured in days rather than minutes, and the same structural logic underlies other long-acting analogs in this class.
Semaglutide is a synthetic peptide analog of glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone released from intestinal L-cells after food intake. It contains 31 amino acids and differs from native GLP-1 through modifications that slow enzymatic breakdown. The peptide was developed to extend the short circulating half-life of endogenous GLP-1, which is measured in minutes. Researchers introduced the compound in the early 2010s. Two backbone changes and a fatty acid side chain define its structure, distinguishing it from earlier GLP-1 receptor agonists.
The compound binds the GLP-1 receptor on pancreatic beta cells and other tissues, activating a G-protein signaling cascade that raises intracellular cyclic AMP. This action increases glucose-dependent insulin secretion when blood glucose is elevated, while binding also slows gastric emptying and reduces glucagon release. In the central nervous system, receptor activation in the hypothalamus and brainstem contributes to reduced appetite. The fatty acid chain binds albumin, which protects the peptide from renal filtration and enzymatic degradation. This albumin binding is central to its extended circulation time.
=== Multi-Stream Transport (MST) === Multi-Stream Transport is a feature first introduced in the DisplayPort 1.2 standard. It allows multiple independent displays to be driven from a single DP port on the source devices by multiplexing several video streams into a single stream and sending it to a branch device, which demultiplexes the signal into the original streams. Branch devices are commonly found in the form of an MST hub, which plugs into a single DP input port and provides multiple outputs, but it can also be implemented on a display internally to provide a DP output port for daisy-chaining, effectively embedding a 2-port MST hub inside the display. Theoretically, up to 63 displays can be supported, but the combined data rate requirements of all the displays cannot exceed the limits of a single DP port (17.28 Gbit/s for a DP 1.2 port, or 25.92 Gbit/s for a DP 1.3/1.4 port). In addition, the maximum number of links between the source and any device (i.e. the maximum length of a daisy-chain) is 7, and the maximum number of physical output ports on each branch device (such as a hub) is 7. With the release of MST, standard single-display operation has been retroactively named "SST" mode (Single-Stream Transport). Daisy-chaining is a feature that must be specifically supported by each intermediary display; not all DisplayPort 1.2 devices support it. Daisy-chaining requires a dedicated DisplayPort output port on the display. Standard DisplayPort input ports found on most displays cannot be used as a daisy-chain output.
Precipitate formation is a core step in gravimetric analysis, which is used to identify and quantify ions. A common example of precipitation from aqueous solution is that of silver chloride. When silver nitrate (AgNO3) is added to a solution of potassium chloride (KCl) the precipitation of a white solid (AgCl) is observed.
=== P granules === Another example of liquid droplets in cells are the germline P granules in Caenorhabditis elegans. These granules separate out from the cytoplasm and form droplets, as oil does from water. Both the granules and the surrounding cytoplasm are liquid in the sense that they flow in response to forces, and two of the granules can coalesce when they come in contact. When (some of) the molecules in the granules are studied (via fluorescence recovery after photobleaching), they are found to rapidly turnover in the droplets, meaning that molecules diffuse into and out of the granules, just as expected in a liquid droplet. The droplets can also grow to be many molecules across (micrometres) Studies of droplets of the Caenorhabditis elegans protein LAF-1 in vitro also show liquid-like behaviour, with an apparent viscosity

=== Food fortification === Countries fortify foods with nutrients to address known deficiencies. While many countries mandate or have voluntary programs to fortify wheat flour, maize (corn) flour or rice with vitamins, none include vitamin C in those programs. As described in Vitamin C Fortification of Food Aid Commodities (1997), the United States provides rations to international food relief programs, later under the auspices of the Food for Peace Act and the Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance. Vitamin C is added to corn-soy blend and wheat-soy blend products at 40 mg/100 grams. (along with minerals and other vitamins). Supplemental rations of these highly fortified, blended foods are provided to refugees and displaced persons in camps and to beneficiaries of development feeding programs that are targeted largely toward mothers and children. The report adds: "The stability of vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) is of concern because this is one of the most labile vitamins in foods. Its main loss during processing and storage is from oxidation, which is accelerated by light, oxygen, heat, increased pH, high moisture content (water activity), and the presence of copper or ferrous salts. To reduce oxidation, the vitamin C used in commodity fortification is coated with ethyl cellulose (2.5 percent). Oxidative losses also occur during food processing and preparation, and additional vitamin C may be lost if it dissolves into cooking liquid and is then discarded."
Other factors can cause glaucoma, known as "secondary glaucoma", including prolonged use of steroids (steroid-induced glaucoma); conditions that severely restrict blood flow to the eye, such as severe diabetic retinopathy and central retinal vein occlusion (neovascular glaucoma); ocular trauma (angle-recession glaucoma); plateau iris; and inflammation of the middle layer of the pigmented vascular eye structure (uveitis), known as uveitic glaucoma.
Besides OI's association with sensorineural hearing loss, OI is associated with several neurological abnormalities, usually involving the central nervous system, due to deformities in the skeletal structures surrounding it. Neurological complications, especially basilar invagination, may adversely affect life expectancy. In OI, this is most often due to upwards migration of the dens, a feature of the C2 vertebra. Neurosurgery may be needed to correct severe abnormalities when they risk the patient's life or cause either great suffering or intolerable neurological deficits.
=== Reception === Underworld has a 30% overall approval rating on film-critics' aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes based on 161 reviews, with an average rating of 4.8/10. The site's consensus reads, "Though stylish to look at, Underworld is tedious and derivative." Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 42 out of 100, based on 34 critics, indicating "mixed or average" reviews. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale. Roger Ebert said, "This is a movie so paltry in its characters and shallow in its story that the war seems to exist primarily to provide graphic visuals". However, some critics were more favorable: the New York Daily News praised it as being "stylish and cruel, and mightily entertaining for certain covens out there". Salon reviewer Andrew O'Hehir gave a mixed review, stating, "by any reasonable standard, this dark vampire epic — all massive overacting, cologne-commercial design and sexy cat suits — sucks," but that "at least it gives a crap", conceding that despite the movie's flaws, the complex vampire-werewolf mythology backstory "has been meticulously worked out". The film has since developed a strong cult following.
== Reactions == As a lactone, GBL is hydrolyzed under basic conditions, for example in a sodium hydroxide solution into sodium gamma-hydroxybutyrate, the sodium salt of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid. In acidic water, a mixture of the lactone and acid forms exists in an equilibrium. These compounds then may go on to form the polymer poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) as well as the dimer 1,6-Dioxecane-2,7-dione. When treated with a non-nucleophilic base, such as lithium diisopropylamide, GBL undergoes deprotonation of the alpha carbon atom to the carbonyl.

== Public opinion == In January 2026, Pew Research Center published a poll on American public opinion regarding the Greenland crisis. The results showed that 58% of respondents oppose efforts to take over Greenland, either strongly (45%) or somewhat (13%), while 22% support either strongly (10%) or somewhat (12%), and another 20% were unsure. In Greenland, a poll from January 2025 showed that public opinion was overwhelmingly against American takeover, with 85% reporting opposition to becoming a part of the United States, while 6% supported and 9% were unsure. In a YouGov poll in February 2026 among major Europeans countries, a majority of respondents in all countries polled reported unfavourable views of the United States because of the Greenland crisis. At the same time, a majority in all polled countries reported are sceptical that European countries collectively are able to stand up to the United States, and a plurality of respondents in all countries (except Germany) reported their belief that this US foreign policy is temporary and will only last during the Trump presidency.
The term "Soft Bodied" refers to animals which lack typical systems of skeletal support - included in these are most insect larvae and true worms. Animals that are soft bodied are constrained by the geometry and form of their bodies. However it is the geometry and form of their bodies that generate the forces they need to move. The structure of soft bodied skin can be characterized by a patterned fiber arrangement, which provides the shape and structure for a soft bodied animals. Internal to the patterned fiber layer is typically a liquid filled cavity, which is used to generate hydrostatic pressures for movement. Some animals that exhibit soft bodied locomotion include starfish, octopus, and flatworms.
The rhinoceros viper (Bitis nasicornis) is a large species of viper that is similar to the Gaboon viper, but not as venomous, smaller and with a less dangerous bite. They are slow moving, but like other Bitis species, they're capable of striking quickly, forwards or sideways, without coiling first or giving a warning. Holding them by the tail is not safe; as it is somewhat prehensile, they can use it to fling themselves upwards and strike. They have been described as generally placid creatures, not as bad-tempered as the Puff adder. When approached, they often reveal their presence by hissing, said to be the loudest hiss of any African snake – almost a shriek. Relatively little is known about the toxicity and composition of the venom, but it has very minor neurotoxic, as well as hemotoxic venom, as do most other venomous snakes. The hemotoxic venom in rhinoceros vipers is much more dominant. This venom attacks the circulatory system of the snake's victim, destroying tissue and blood vessels. Internal bleeding also occurs. In mice, the intravenous LD50 is 1.1 mg/kg. The venom is supposedly slightly less toxic than those of the Puff adder and the Gaboon viper. The maximum wet venom yield is 200 mg. In only a few detailed reports of human envenomation, massive swelling, which may lead to necrosis, had been described. In 2003, a man in Dayton, Ohio, who was keeping a specimen as a pet, was bitten and subsequently died. At least one antivenom protects specifically against bites from this species: India Antiserum Africa Polyvalent.
To counter a perceived threat to rabbinical authority, the Talmud states that Shmuel ha-Katan of Yavne enacted the "twelfth benediction" in the daily prayer, i.e., the benediction against apostates and heretics (Hebrew: minim).
== Applications == HBsAg made through recombinant DNA is used to make the hepatitis B vaccine. It has a very good efficacy of about 95%, with protection lasting for more than 30 years, even after the anti-HbsAg antigen titers have fallen. The RTS,S also makes use of HBsAg. It is a mixture of a version of malaria surface antigen grafted to HBsAg (RTS) and ordinary HBsAg (S), both made through recombinant DNA. Much like ordinary HBsAg, these two are able to assemble into virus-like particles that are soluble in water.
